Ar.232 "Tausendfüßler" ("Centipede") is a military transport aircraft intended for operation from unprepared unpaved sites. Its design provided for an additional chassis of 10-11 pairs of small wheels along the lower part of the fuselage, on which it could steer at low speed, overcoming the trunks of fallen trees up to 15 cm thick and ditches up to 1.5 m wide. The main landing gear consisted of a semi-retractable bow pillars and main pillars retractable into the wing. A feature of the design of the main struts was the ability to tighten up in the process of loading and unloading operations. In this case, the plane was lowered onto the wheels of the additional landing gear, and the rear cargo hatch was at the level of the truck body. After the completion of the work, the main struts raised the aircraft so that during takeoff the additional landing gear did not touch the runway.
