Rikugun Kokugitsu Kenkiiso

In the summer of 1941, a few months before the start of the war in the Pacific, by order of Koku Hombu, located in the city of Tachikawa, the Army Aviation Research Institute (Rikugun Kokuchitsu Kenkiiso. abbreviated as Giken, or Kogiken) began preliminary work on a heavy twin-engine project fighter. For this purpose, a team of specialists from several Japanese aircraft manufacturing firms was created at the institute.
