S.M. 84
Medium Bomber and Torpedo Bomber
Savoia-Marchetti
The new medium torpedo bomber is an "improved" version of the S.M.79 with a new fuselage, armament, propulsion system and tail assembly. The first flight of the prototype S.M. 84 on June 5, 1940.
However, an attempt to improve the controllability of the aircraft and increase the angles of fire by installing a new empennage did not actually lead to the expected results.
Replacing reliable engines with more powerful and capricious ones led to an increase in flight incidents due to power plant failures.
By August 1943, torpedo bombers were in service with only one group - 98 Gr.B.T., consisting of 11 S.M. 84, and by September 8, Regia Aeronatuca did not have a single torpedo bomber suitable for combat missions.
Weapons . Four 12.7 mm machine guns. Bomb load - 2000 kg or two torpedoes 860 kg each
