(Rus) Thousand-pounders fall from the wing racks of a Wg Cdr B. V. Robinson's Halifax during the attack on the German warships in Brest harbour, 18 December 1941. The No 35 Squadron CO was flying V9978/ TL:A, and while leaving the target the aircraft's port inner engine was hit by flak. A fire started and soon spread to the other port engine. Although the fires were eventually extinguished, the aircraft lost height and the Wing Commander decided to ditch in the sea. This was accomplished successfully some 60 miles from England and all members of the crew were rescued, little the worse for their experience. (IWM C3046)
