Boeing 17F 23290/R 'Raunchy Wolf' of the 551 st Bomb Squadron's

(Rus)  The wing of the 551 st Bomb Squadron's 23290/R Raunchy Wolf provides shade from the fierce African sun. Aircrew had to perform their own maintenance before the flight back to England, attacking a target in France en route. This B-17F was lost in a collision over southeast Essex while returning from a mission on 26 September 1943. Only one gunner survived of the twenty aircrew involved. (USAAF)
